Keep the two depegging episodes distinct
The concealed trading-firm intervention described here concerns May 2021. It should not be relabelled as the May 2022 collapse simply because both involve UST. The December 2025 sentencing announcement uses the earlier episode to explain a misleading claim about how the peg had been restored. The chronology is essential to understanding what the represented mechanism did and did not prove.
The sentence
On 11 December 2025, DOJ announced a 15-year prison sentence for Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon. The announcement followed his August 2025 guilty plea and described fraud involving Terraform's cryptocurrency products. The record connects misleading technical and governance claims with decisions made to attract purchasers of those assets.
The peg restoration claim
A central example concerns May 2021. Kwon represented the restoration of UST's dollar peg as evidence that the protocol worked on its own. The sentencing account instead describes an agreement with a trading firm to buy large amounts of UST and support the price. The observed return to one dollar therefore did not establish the mechanism that investors had been told was responsible.
Governance was also at issue
The record also describes misleading claims about the independence of the Luna Foundation Guard. According to DOJ, Kwon controlled it alongside Terraform and made significant decisions without the advertised independent governance. Readers should distinguish these documented representations from a general claim that all stablecoins or all decentralised systems operate in the same way.
Sources, dates and limits
This account is based on the 11 December 2025 sentencing announcement. It does not provide a current token valuation, an assessment of successor projects or the latest appeal position. The described May 2021 intervention and later collapse are distinct events.
