AERO migration: why account type changes the outcome

Contents
At a glance
Coinbase’s AERO/VELO migration has different rules for customer balances and Prime Vault. We compare the deadlines, conversion ratios and transfer restrictions.
The account determines who handles the conversion
Coinbase’s AERO and VELO migration illustrates why a token holder needs more than the phrase “exchange supports the swap”. The provider may handle a balance in a trading account while excluding the same asset in a separate custody product. That difference determines who must arrange the conversion and which notice applies.
As checked on 2 November 2026, Coinbase’s customer help page describes automatic conversion, while its Prime notice distinguishes Trading from Vault. Bitget publishes another set of funding restrictions for the same migration. These records support a comparison of service rules. They do not verify the result in anyone’s account, prove a provider’s solvency or establish that every withdrawal is available.
Retail support has an asset-specific scope
Coinbase’s customer page schedules AERO conversion from 2–4 November 2026 at 1:1 and VELO conversion over the same dates at approximately 0.044 AERO per VELO. It says eligible balances require no customer action and lists no transaction fees for the conversion. Sends and receives pause during the migration.
The scope matters: those instructions concern balances Coinbase holds under that service. They do not authorize a website to spend tokens in a separate personal wallet. The page also warns that Coinbase will stop supporting legacy AERO deposits after the migration and may be unable to recover such deposits. A familiar ticker on a sending screen cannot settle whether the receiving service accepts the old contract. That depends on the destination’s current asset and network support.
Prime Vault creates a separate decision
The Prime notice says AERO in Prime Vault will not convert automatically. It told holders to move it to Prime Trading or a compatible self-custody wallet before 2 November 2026. That cutoff has arrived; repeating the old instruction as a future opportunity would mislead a reader who has missed it. They need current account-specific instructions from authenticated Prime support.
Prime’s notice also contains unresolved wording. The calendar block runs from 2–4 November, while the conversion description says 2–6 November. It describes temporary Prime Trading send/receive restrictions but later says Prime Vault and Trading will continue supporting VELO sends and receives. We cannot infer a universal reopening time from those statements. The provider must clarify which operation, asset and account the restriction covers.
Published rules differ by service
| Service / holding | Conversion rule | Transfer limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase customer balances | AERO 1:1; VELO approximately 0.044 AERO per VELO | Sends/receives pause during migration; legacy AERO deposits unsupported afterward |
| Coinbase Prime Trading | Automatic conversion described; dates differ between calendar and body | Prime wording conflicts for VELO; verify the specific operation |
| Coinbase Prime Vault | AERO and VELO do not convert automatically | Earlier movement cutoff has arrived; obtain current account-specific instructions |
| Bitget exchange balances | Old AERO 1:1; VELODROME 1:0.044 | Funding pause; new AERO reopening requires a separate notice |
A conversion ratio does not fix market value
The arithmetic measures replacement units. At the published approximate VELO rate, an illustrative holding of 1000 VELO corresponds to about 44 AERO. At the published old-AERO rate, 1000 old AERO corresponds to 1000 new AERO. This is a worked calculation, not a verified account credit or an estimate of proceeds.
A reader would still need a market price, executable liquidity and any applicable costs to calculate a sale outcome. A smaller token count does not, by itself, quantify a loss. Nor does equal token count guarantee equal purchasing power. Coinbase flags possible tax consequences for automatic VELO conversion; the notice does not determine an individual holder’s tax treatment. Keep the conversion record separate from any later trade or tax calculation.
Trading and transfers can follow different clocks
Bitget’s notice schedules AERO deposits and withdrawals to pause from 03:00 UTC on 2 November 2026. That is 04:00 CET in Berlin. It says the existing AERO spot pair will keep trading, while VELODROME/USDT has been delisted. New AERO funding will reopen through a separate announcement; the notice does not give a completion time.
A trading screen can therefore show orders while the holder cannot move that asset off-platform. A paused withdrawal does not identify the cause without the accompanying notice, and it does not establish a hack. Conversely, a functioning spot market does not prove transfer access. Compare each function separately: trading, deposits, withdrawals and conversion. A calendar window for one provider cannot establish when another provider will reopen the same token.
Evidence of completion comes after the announcement
To assess a completed migration, match the provider’s completion announcement to the account record: old balance, replacement quantity, asset identity and date. If a subsequent withdrawal occurs, keep its network and transaction reference as a separate record. An internal conversion and an external transfer answer different questions about the holder’s access.
For self-custodied tokens, the applicable issuer instructions must identify the supported chain and contract; a ticker match is insufficient. This analysis has not reviewed a migration portal or instructed readers to approve a contract. Do not treat a message from an unsolicited support account as a substitute for those records. Our related support-verification guide explains how to check such a contact independently. Review this comparison when providers issue completion notices or change their funding rules; the original timetable cannot certify a later balance.
