OpenVPN Connect: review, download and setup

OpenVPN Connect: official VPN client downloads, .ovpn profile import, work network access checks and comparisons with WireGuard and Tailscale.

What is OpenVPN Connect used for?

OpenVPN Connect connects the device to the VPN server on the issued profile. The client will be useful for accessing the work network, home server or resources of the provider that supports OpenVPN. The application itself does not issue server addresses and does not include an Internet subscription through another country: these parameters are provided by the administrator or the selected service.

To start with the question of what resources should be opened after the connection. For one internal site, a route to the working network is enough. To transfer all Internet traffic you need another profile and appropriate server settings. The connection name and green indicator do not allow you to determine this mode. The review shows the Windows client; download pages offer separate applications for other supported OSs.

How OpenVPN Connect uses a Connection Profile

The official manual describes the import of the profile from a file or at the address. The .ovpn file contains connection settings and can include certificates and a private key. Get it through an agreed channel. Before importing, specify the server owner, the order of entry and the need for a separate password or second factor. The link from an unfamiliar letter is first checked with the administrator.

After import, check not only the installation of the tunnel. Open the desired service, check the permission of its name and make sure that the expected resource is available. If the corporate address is opened and the usual sites go directly, this can be provided for by the separation of routes. Do not correct such behavior with random settings from the instructions to another provider.

Download OpenVPN Connect from the official website

Select the supported platform on the project page. The link leads to the selection of the distribution, and does not start the installation automatically.

Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.

Getting started with OpenVPN Connect

  1. Open the official OpenVPN Connect page and select the app for your OS.
  2. Get a valid profile and authentication method from the owner of the VPN server.
  3. Import your .ovpn file or use the agreed import address; check the profile name.
  4. Connect, enter the requested account data and check the client status.
  5. Open the target internal service; separately check DNS and routing Internet traffic.
  6. Turn off the tunnel and check that closed resources are not available again in the expected way.

Limitations and data protection in OpenVPN Connect

Treat your VPN profile as a credential. Do not attach the full profile to a public bug report. If a device is lost, ask your administrator to revoke its access. Uninstalling the app from another device does not revoke access.

OpenVPN Connect does not replace the protection of the device itself. The user who entered the mail or working portal remains identifiable for this service. If the connection is erroneous, check the profile validity, the login method and server availability first. Do not disable the certificate verification in order to eliminate the warning.

Alternatives for related tasks

WireGuard is convenient for setting up a tunnel between known nodes, and Tailscale adds device control and access through its own coordination system. The choice of OpenVPN Connect is usually determined by the already operating server and organization profiles. PuTTY is needed for a separate SSH session and does not replace network access to all applications.
