PeaZip: review, download and setup
PeaZip: choose a format for encrypted archives, protect file names, download the official build and test extraction on the recipient’s device.
What is PeaZip used for?
PeaZip combines the file manager and tools to create and unpack archives. To protect documents, it is useful when you need to collect files in one package and transfer it with a password. The official website has builds for Windows, macOS and Linux; specific installation options and checksums are selected on the project page.
Start with the recipient's claims. He needs a program that understands the selected format and method of encryption. A simple opening of ZIP does not mean support for any ZIP protection method. For an important exchange, first send a small test archive and check the unpacking on the device where the person will read the documents.

How to Choose an Archive Encryption in PeaZip
PeaZip supports several formats with different encryption capabilities. Choose the format and protection parameters before the archive is created. If you need to hide the names of attachments, separately check the support for the encryption of the names in the selected format: the password for the content does not always hide the list of files. After creating, open the archive without entering the password and see what you see to the outsider.
Transfer the password separately from the archive, through the channel agreed with the addressee. Do not include it in the file name and in the same public message with a link. Use a separate long password saved in the password manager. For a key file script, check in advance how the recipient will receive and save this component.
Download PeaZip from the official website
Select the supported platform on the project page. The link leads to the selection of the distribution, and does not start the installation automatically.
Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.
Getting started with PeaZip
- Go to the official PeaZip website and select the build for your OS.
- Check the packet with the published project; do not replace the site with a similar domain.
- Select test documents and open the creation of a new archive.
- Set the format, password and, if required, filename protection.
- Create an archive and check what you can see without a password and what happens with the wrong password.
- Ask the recipient to unpack the test copy; save the source files until successful verification.

Limitations and data protection in PeaZip
After unpacking, documents are available in open form in the selected folder. The archive encryption does not automatically apply to previously stored sources, temporary copies and postables. Before the transfer, check the composition of the package so as not to include unnecessary personal data or work drafts.
The checksum helps to verify the file with the published value, but it must be obtained from a trusted source. The project separately warns of outsiders and similar domains. Do not consider the arbitrary installer official only because its name has a PeaZip. Check the package signing information in the current developer's message.
Alternatives for related tasks
Gpg4win is suitable for sharing with verified public keys and for digital signatures. PeaZip is convenient for an archive package with a password. VeraCrypt is designed to work with a volume, and Cryptomator with encrypted file storage. Choose how the document will be stored and opened after the transfer.
