VeraCrypt: review, download and setup
VeraCrypt: create a file container, mount and dismount it, plan backups and understand what volume encryption protects.
What is VeraCrypt used for?
VeraCrypt allows you to work with encrypted volumes. For acquaintance, a file container is convenient: it is stored as a file, and after mounting becomes available for documents. This is different from the password archive and file cloud synchronization.
There are different modes, including work with sections; the capabilities depend on the platform. Start with a regular container on test data. Operations with partitions and a system disk require separate preparation and verified copies.

File container VeraCrypt: creation and mount
The initial manual creates a standard volume inside the file: a new path, parameters and password are selected. After work, the volume is turned off. Do not choose an existing important file as a harmless workpiece and carefully read the warnings before formatting.
The container can be copied, portable and deleted as a file. Password does not replace a copy. Keep verified instances and consider the latest changes. Copying with an active recording can give an inconsistent version.
Download VeraCrypt from the official website
Select the supported platform on the project page. The link leads to the selection of the distribution, and does not start the installation automatically.
Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.
Getting started with VeraCrypt
- Choose the official build for the OS and read the initial guide.
- Create a standard file container in a new location on the test data, not a working section.
- Set the size, password and parameters. Do not keep the only password inside the container.
- mount the volume, add the test document, turn off and check the reopening.
- Make a copy of the closed container; for important data, study the header reservation and restore.

Limitations and data protection in VeraCrypt
While the volume is mounted, the user and applications can access its contents subject to OS permissions. Storage encryption cannot prevent malware infections, keystroke capture or exposure of unencrypted copies elsewhere.
Damage to the storage device, container or header can make the volume inaccessible even with the correct password. Verify a separate backup and plan recovery before modifying partitions.
Alternatives for related tasks
For cloud folders, compare Cryptomator with the file organization. VeraCrypt is convenient for a container or volume. It is better to store service passwords in a specialized manager: the container does not allow URL checks and separate records management.
