What is ZeroTier used for?
ZeroTier integrates allowed devices into a virtual network on top of an existing connection. This access is convenient for a home server, collaboration and services that should remain available only to network participants. The client is installed on the device and the network parameters are set by the controller.
In a typical scenario, ZeroTier Central is used: the owner creates a network, connects customers and allows specific devices. Having an app on both sides does not mean that access is ready. You need to check the authorization, assigned addresses, local firewalls and the service itself to which the connection is planned.

ZeroTier network: device IDs and authorization
The network identifier indicates to the client where to join. For a private network, the next single step is to approve the device in the controller. Check its identifier with the owner's device, not allow all unknown requests in a row. If you lose your computer, withdraw it and check the services available to him.
A virtual network does not run a file server, a remote desktop or a database automatically. Configure the service you need and limit it to access from the expected addresses. Test the connection between your two devices before expanding the network: so it's easier to separate the service error from the route problem.

Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.
Getting started with ZeroTier
- Install ZeroTier from the official page under the desired OS.
- Create a private network in Central and save its identifier.
- Connect your two devices and check their identifiers before authorization.
- Check the assigned addresses and connect to one authorized service.
- Remove the test permissions and describe the procedure for revoking the device and restoring the owner's access.

Limitations and data protection in ZeroTier
A standard ZeroTier connection does not route all internet traffic through an exit node. That requires separate routes and gateway configuration. A network appearing in the client does not prove that the public IP address has changed.
The possibilities of Central and the terms of the tariffs may change. Do not transfer the limits of the old plan to the current account. The controller and devices remain part of the trusted infrastructure; the compromise of the permitted node is dangerous and inside the encrypted network.
Alternatives for related tasks
ZeroTier and Tailscale help to connect devices, but use different network and control models. For a simple connection to a single VPN server, WireGuard may be enough. The choice depends on the number of nodes, routing and the one who manages the permissions.

Does ZeroTier automatically hides an external IP?
Oh, no. Private virtual network and the output of the entire Internet traffic through the gateway - different settings.
Do you know the Network ID?
For a private network, the device must obtain the permission of the controller. Check its identifier before approval.
Why is the node visible and the folder is not available?
Check the file service, its rights, connection address and local firewall on the receiving device.
