Hat.sh: review, download and setup

Encrypt a file in your browser with Hat.sh, save the output and learn how to host the app yourself.

What is Hat.sh used for?

Hat.sh encrypts and decrypts files in the browser. The developer describes processing on the client side without uploading the contents of files to the server. The application is available as a website and as the source code for self-sharing.

Work in the browser does not cancel the trust in the downloaded code and the device itself. Check the address of the page, browser extensions and source of the application. For a sensitive process, it is useful to study independently placement in advance.

Check the result before closing the tab

Select the test file and the appropriate encryption mode. After processing, save the received file to the disk: the availability of the result in the interface does not mean that the download is completed. Do not close the page until the end of the save.

Then open the decryption mode and check the copy. Store the password separately from the encrypted file. When using the key mode, you need the appropriate key data, not just the usual password.

Download Hat.sh from the official website

Select the supported platform on the project page. The link leads to the selection of the distribution, and does not start the installation automatically.

Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.

Getting started with Hat.sh

  1. Open an official website or a verified installation.
  2. Choose a small test file.
  3. Set up the password or the specified key mode.
  4. Save the encrypted result and wait for the completion.
  5. Decrypt a copy and compare the contents.

Limitations and data protection in Hat.sh

The ability to handle large files and save depends on the browser. Check your script before working with a single copy of a large archive.

The application does not encrypt the entire disk and does not delete the open originals. Cleaning of temporary copies and protection of the device are solved separately.

Alternatives for related tasks

AES Crypt is convenient as an installed application for individual files. Hat.sh is suitable for a browser-based scenario when the limitations of the environment and the trust in the page code are clear.
