KeePass: review, download and setup
KeePass: local KDBX password databases, official downloads, master key setup, password generation and backup verification.
What is KeePass used for?
KeePass stores records with passwords in an encrypted database file. To start work, you do not need a cloud service account. You choose where the base is, how to transfer it between devices and where to keep a backup. This review examines KeePass 2.x and its Windows interface; independent programs with similar titles have their own developers.
In the database, it is convenient to divide personal and working records by groups, save the site address and note to the login method. Start with a few test records. If you immediately transfer a single copy of all passwords, an error in storing the file or losing the master key will be a problem for the entire set of accounts.

How KeePass protects the database file and master key
The master key opens the base. When you use a combination of password and a key file, you'll need both components to recover. The key file should not be left next to a single copy of the base without additional protection: think about who will get access to each component in case of loss of the computer.
The generator helps to create different passwords for accounts. First, check the requirements of a particular service to the length and symbols, then save the recording and check the input. Avvond should be used in the correct window: before launch, check the site address and the selected record. The history and backups of the database are useful when erroneously changing, but do not replace the recovery check.
Download KeePass from the official website
Select the supported platform on the project page. The link leads to the selection of the distribution, and does not start the installation automatically.
Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.
Getting started with KeePass
- Download KeePass 2.x from the official page; select the installation or portable option.
- Create a test base and set the master password. If you add a key file, save the plan to restore it.
- Add a group and record with a test address, username and password generated.
- Save the base, lock it and check the reopening.
- Open a separate backup and open it without changing the working file.
- After successful check, transfer the real records and configure the lock of the base in case simple.

Limitations and data protection in KeePass
KeePass has no universal email reset for the master password. If you lose every required part of the master key and have no accessible copy, the developer cannot restore access for you. Record your recovery procedure before moving important accounts.
The open base does not protect against all actions on the infected device. The clipboard, attachments and plugins require special attention. Install only the desired plugins from the trusted sources; each additional component increases the amount of code you trust. Export to an unencrypted format, store only as much as you need to transfer.
Alternatives for related tasks
KeePassXC offers an independent cross-platform interface for compatible bases, and KeePassDX is designed for Android. When editing together, check the format compatibility and synchronization order. Bitwarden is more convenient if you need a service with records and synchronization, which does not need to be managed as a separate file.
