FreeFileSync: review, download and setup
Compare folders and preview changes before running two-way sync or mirroring in FreeFileSync.
What is FreeFileSync used for?
FreeFileSync compares folders and shows a plan to copy, update, and delete files. It is useful for transferring data to another disk and maintaining agreed copies. The synchronization mode is selected for a specific task.
Bilateral synchronization and mirror vary. In mirror mode, the purpose contents are given to the source, including possible deletions. Before launch, you need to check the direction, and not focus only on familiar names of folders.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Platforms | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| Use case | Secure file transfer |
| Download source | Use the project’s official page and choose the build for your operating system. |
| Version and terms | Current builds and conditions of use are given from the developer. The review does not record the unchanged version number. |
Review the comparison before writing changes
Specify two test folders and perform a comparison first. Look at the action icons and the deletion list. Filters can exclude part of the files, so the absence of action does not mean the complete match of directories.
For regular work, save a clear configuration. If you need a change history, set up a suitable option for storing deleted or replaced files. Periodically check the recovery, not just the successful completion of the task.
Download FreeFileSync from the official website
Select the supported platform on the project page. The link leads to the selection of the distribution, and does not start the installation automatically.
Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.

Limitations and data protection in FreeFileSync
Synchronization can repeat the source error on the appointment. The only mirror copy does not protect against all data loss scenarios.
There are different terms of reference and use. For commercial use, check the appropriate license on the official website.
Alternatives for related tasks
rclone is convenient for command line and cloud storage. FreeFileSync is suitable for those who need graphical viewing of the differences and action plan before synchronization.
