MobaXterm: review, download and setup

Set up SSH, SFTP and X11 in Windows and compare MobaXterm Home and Professional.

What is MobaXterm used for?

MobaXterm combines the terminal, SSH connections, built-in X server and remote access tools in Windows. With an SSH session, the file dashboard helps to work with server files via SFTP.

The developer offers the Home Edition and Professional Edition. Their limitations and conditions of use vary. Choose the editorial board on the official table, especially when deploying to the organization.

Use one SSH session for terminal and file access

Create a profile with address and user, then check the host key through the administrator. The filebar uses access to the remote system: accidentally deleting or replacing the file has real consequences.

X11 forwarding is needed for graphic applications of a remote system. Don't turn it on without need. SSH tunnels and agent redirection also expand access and require understanding of the finite addresses.

Download MobaXterm from the official website

Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.

Getting started with MobaXterm

  1. Compare Home and Professional on the download page.
  2. Select the installation or portable build of Windows.
  3. Create an SSH session with a correct address and user.
  4. Check the host key and check the entrance.
  5. Check the SFTP on the test file and save only the desired parameters.

MobaXterm interface and illustrations

Limitations and data protection in MobaXterm

The picture from the documentation shows the developer's interface; the set of functions depends on the editorial board. The presence of a button in the illustration does not promise its availability in Home.

Sessions, keys and preserved details need to be protected. The portable build does not make the settings directory safe for a shared drive.

Alternatives for related tasks

PuTTY is easier for a separate SSH session. MobaXterm is convenient when you need a terminal, a file bar and an X11 in one Windows app; WinSCP is better for working with files.
