WinSCP: review, download and setup

WinSCP: official downloads, SFTP setup, host key verification and file synchronization without unintended overwrites.

What is WinSCP used for?

WinSCP is a graphical file transfer client for Windows. It is suitable for loading the site, receiving reports and working with files on a remote node. This is the client: on the other side there must be a server and an account issued to you.

In the settings there are SFTP, SCP, FTP, FTPS and other options. It doesn't mean one protocol. For a server with SSH, you usually choose SFTP. The usual FTP by itself does not provide the same protected channel; the protocol and port need to be obtained from the administrator.

Connecting with WinSCP over SFTP and choosing a directory

The session needs a host name, protocol, user and authentication method. The file management address may differ from the public domain of the site. When you first connect, check the SSH key's fingerprint with the trusted owner's data.

The dual-panel interface does not protect against the wrong direction of copying. Check the full path, environment and file names. For the site, a separate account with limited rights is useful, and not the main administrative access.

Download WinSCP from the official website

Select the supported platform on the project page. The link leads to the selection of the distribution, and does not start the installation automatically.

Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.

Getting started with WinSCP

  1. Install WinSCP from the official page and select the confirmed protocol.
  2. Enter the server and the user, set up the password or key. Do not send a private key in support.
  3. Check the entry post to trust and check the folder that opens.
  4. Send a small test file to the allowed directory and check the result.
  5. Before synchronization, see the direction, change and deletion. Save a copy of the modified files.

Limitations and data protection in WinSCP

Synchronization is not a backup. Error or deletion can go to the other side depending on the settings. Do not mirror an important directory without viewing the actions and the possibility of recovery.

Transmission encryption does not mean that the files are encrypted on the server disk. Protect your saved passwords and keys locally. Logs and screenshots can reveal the names, paths and infrastructure addresses.

Alternatives for related tasks

WinSCP is useful when working with a file tree. For one copy, it can be enough scp or sftp, for commands on the server - PuTTY. OnionShare is designed to be handed over to the addressee without a pre-existing server account.
