Zenmap: review, download and setup

Zenmap: the official graphical interface for Nmap, scan profiles, result interpretation and checks within authorized network ranges.

What is Zenmap used for?

Zenmap is the Nmap graphical interface to view and map the results of network checks. It helps set a goal, see the command parameters and learn information about the detected nodes and services. The tool is designed to work on the network that you administer or have the right to check.

Profiles reduce manual input, but do not remove the need to understand the actual parameters. The profile name does not guarantee that it is suitable for production equipment. For the first start, select one own test node and a coordinated little check, not an entire external network.

Zenmap: goal, profile and read Nmap output

Check the target address and the shown command before launch. An error in the range is able to send requests to other people's devices or create an extra load. For a shared server and sensitive equipment, agree on the time and allowable parameters with the owner; do not use an intensive profile as a universal configuration.

The tabs help to read the output and information about the node. An open port means the observed availability of the service under verification conditions, not the established vulnerability. The lack of an answer is also ambiguous: filtering, node state and traffic path influence. Save the test time and conditions to make the comparison meaningful.

Download Zenmap from the official website

Select the supported platform on the project page. The link leads to the selection of the distribution, and does not start the installation automatically.

Use the official download address. Check the signature or checksum if the project publishes one. Keep secret configuration files private when contacting support.

Getting started with Zenmap

  1. Download Nmap and the available Zenmap package from the official project page.
  2. Make sure that the necessary components are installed for your OS.
  3. Specify one allowed test node and study the final command before launch.
  4. Check the output and match the detected services with the configuration of your node.
  5. Save the result with the verification time and area; delete sensitive data before transmitting the report.

Limitations and data protection in Zenmap

Even regular checks create network requests. On the production network, consider the rules of the owner, the means of detecting and restricting the devices. Do not automatically expand the test area to the neighboring addresses found.

Estimates of the version of the service and the operating system require confirmation from the data of the node itself. The Zenmap result is not proof of the hack or a ready-made security report. To analyze a specific connection error, it is sometimes more useful to a short Wireshark capture or a list of process connections.

Alternatives for related tasks

Angry IP Scanner is convenient for simple address review, Zenmap for Nmap, Wireshark results for packet analysis. Portmaster monitors and restricts the connections of applications on its computer. Start with a question to answer the test.
